After he kicked off yesterday's marathon, Mayor Michael Bloomberg went on a Sunday sprint across the city while his Democratic rival campaigned with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in Washington Heights.
In the Bronx, Clinton and other Democrats joined Ferrer in the Bronx for a march and rally as the trailing candidate tried to close a wide gap in the polls and race for the finish line on the last weekend before tomorrow's vote.
In a brief news conference, most of the questions were directed at Clinton and pertained to national security, her husband and her own political future. But she tried to keep on the subject at hand.
"I'm running for re-election, but first I'm running to help Freddy," she said, when asked to comment on former President Bill Clinton's statement that she might make a better president than he did.
"Absolutely, absolutely," she said. "You know it all depends upon who votes on Tuesday and I think with this enthusiasm and the incredibly unified elected officials that you see here and throughout the city, I absolutely think that you're looking at the next mayor of the city of New York."
The entourage marched about eight blocks from 170th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue while someone chanted "Our votes are not for sale" through a megaphone in English and Spanish.
At one point, a rogue chant of "Hillary" cropped up as sidewalk merchants and shoppers on the crowded, busy street scurried out of the way of the group of marchers, bodyguards and reporters. Some snapped photos of Clinton, Ferrer and Rep. Charles Rangel with their cell phone cameras.
For his part, Bloomberg was an early riser as he kicked off the marathon at 8 a.m. and then offered congratulations to the winners at Central Park.
He also traveled to Borough Park in Brooklyn, a heavily Orthodox Jewish area, and the Upper East Side, where he encouraged supporters to visit the polls and thanked campaign volunteers.
