Two million Brits have Sky Plus, but for your consumer of bog standard Freeview, the wonders of modern technology are relegated to "I wonder what that is?".
Yet the last few days has seen two announcement that could change all that - not to mention the future success, or so we would guess, of HD DVD and Blu-ray DVD too.
But there's also Sony. It too has recently announced its latest foray into the market, and the company has launched an all singing all dancing machine that won't only offer digital recording, but will enable the connection of digital cameras, and a range of other interfaces that could enable the user to use the Sony device to store photos, music and personal videos. It is a true electronic hub. There's even an electronic programming guide.
When George Bush senior became president he once said, presumably with his tongue firmly in his cheek, that he hoped by the end of his term in office most American households would know how to programme a VCR. It would appear that by the time his son's spell in office comes to an end, the technology that George Bush's electorate never really did master, will be replaced by a digital recorder technology that everyone will be able to operate.
