The use of red-light cameras, which take photos of the vehicles that run lights, has not been without a certain amount of controversy elsewhere in the country.
Some critics have assailed it as another step toward Big Brother with omnipresent surveillance, while others have said it's a move geared more toward putting more green in the coffers of government than saving lives at red lights.
In other cases, yellow light durations have been shortened, which inevitably increases the cash going into the coffers of not only the government, but to the company who installs and maintains the lights as well.
The company that the city is looking to contract with for the red-light cameras has said they haven't been involved in that kind of activity and promised everything in Seguin would be run above board.
Given recent court battles concerning red-light cameras and the threat of potential legislation, the company has also said that it would come and collect its cameras at no charge to the city if a new law makes it illegal.
Revenue questions aside, this does have the ability to be a deterrent to drivers who might otherwise think about sneaking through an intersection to shave time off their commute.
Maybe those drivers who let their attention wander while driving will think twice about switching on autopilot if they know a fine could show up in their mailbox.
