Two members of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will speak to a student assembly at Southwood High School today at 9 a.m. The school is at 9000 Walker Road, Shreveport. The elite flying unit is in the region through Sunday to perform at the Barksdale Air Force Base Defenders of Liberty Air Show. Speakers will be Maj. Nicole Malachowski, 32, in her second season as a pilot with the team, and Capt. Amy Glisson, 27, in her first season as the team's executive officer.

For a New Orleans Saints player, cornerback Mike McKenzie said the right thing after a gut-wrenching back-seat ride with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Thursday.

"Oh Heavenly Father," he said, breathless, all sincerity and no blasphemy intended, after a flight that began with a vertical climb that left him, pilot Rob Skelton and their F-16 a mere speck at the top of a white fluffy contrail. "It was awesome!"
